What a Powertrain Is in High Level, Alberta

A powertrain is a system made up of every movable component that makes a vehicle move. Think of it as your car's muscular system. Whereas a drivetrain, which sometimes erroneously gets synonymously used with the word powertrain, is made up of parts that move the wheels, the powertrain transforms kinetic energy into propulsion. The components included in a powertrain include the engine, transmission, and axles.

How Engines & Transmissions Generate Movement

The engine and transmission work together to distribute power. When you turn the key in the ignition, thousands of small controlled explosions in the engine will power its pistons up and down. Engines placed in vehicles usually have two to 12 cylinders with a piston moving up and down in each. Gasoline gets injected directly into these cylinders close to the top of the compression stroke. However, a few engines will premix fuel and air during the intake stroke. Before the piston reaches the top of its path, the spark plugs ignite the air and fuel mix. These combustion cycles end up pushing the piston into a downstroke, which is what gets your car's wheels moving. A transmission is a vehicle's gearbox. Its gear sets and trains let a driver control how much power is being delivered without altering how quickly the engine runs. The transmission makes sure your engine spins at just the right rate of speed and delivers the correct amount of power to the wheels.
